Terms of Use
Last updated 21 September 2026
These terms apply when you use ScholarlyNotes, which is run by ScholarlyNotes, 51 Ricardo Street, London, UK. By creating an account you agree to them and to the Privacy Policy.
A beta service
ScholarlyNotes is in beta. Features can change, and there may be interruptions, bugs, or data loss. We take care of your data, but please keep your own copies of important work (Settings → Export). The service is provided free of charge and “as is”.
Your account
- You must be at least All ages (with parental consent if required by law) years old and give accurate details.
- Keep your password private. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- One person per account. Tell us at once if you think someone else has used yours.
Your content belongs to you
Your notes, drafts, reading notes and everything else you write are yours. You give us only the permission we need to store, back up, display and process them in order to run the service for you. We do not use your notes or drafts to train AI models, and they are never sent to an AI provider. You can export or delete your content at any time.
You confirm that you have the right to store what you put in, and that it does not break the law or anyone else’s rights.
AI features and your own work
The Reading assistant helps you read papers. It works from a paper’s title and abstract only, can be wrong or incomplete, and is not a substitute for reading the paper. Always check it against the source. It does not write, rewrite or expand your notes or drafts, see Our approach to AI.
You are responsible for following the rules of your institution, course, journal or funder about citation, originality and the use of AI tools. Nothing in ScholarlyNotes changes those rules.
Third-party content
Paper metadata and abstracts come from third-party sources such as OpenAlex and Crossref. We do not check them and cannot promise they are complete or correct. Check citations and details against the original before you rely on them or submit work.
Acceptable use
Please do not:
- break the law, or use the service to infringe someone’s rights or upload material you have no right to store;
- try to access other people’s accounts or data, or to probe, overload or disrupt the service;
- use bots or scripts to sign up, scrape, or send large numbers of requests;
- upload malware, or use the service to harass others.
We may limit, suspend or remove accounts that do, and may remove content that breaks these rules.
Availability, liability
We do not promise the service will be uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, work, grades or opportunities arising from the use of a free beta service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law. [Liability wording must be checked by a lawyer for the applicable jurisdiction.]
Ending your use
You can delete your account at any time in Settings, which removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy. We may end or change the service, and will try to give notice and a chance to export your work first.
Changes, law and contact
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we will tell you in the app or by email, and continued use after that means you accept it. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Questions: rajumolla@scholarlynotes.com.
